Photoshop 7.0 Color Correction — Complete Guide
The short version
Photoshop 7.0 has five colour-correction tools that handle every common problem: Levels (Ctrl+L) for tone, Curves (Ctrl+M) for precise tonal control, Color Balance (Ctrl+B) for colour casts, Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U) for vibrancy, and Selective Color for targeted shifts. The order matters: fix tone first with Levels, then colour cast with Color Balance, then vibrancy with Hue/Saturation. Apply all of these as adjustment layers, never directly to pixels, so you can change your mind later.
Why the Order Matters
Colour correction follows a fixed sequence because each step changes the histogram of the image, which is the input the next step relies on:
- Tone first — set the black point, white point, and midtone gamma. This redistributes brightness across the full available range.
- Cast removal next — neutralise any overall blue, yellow, green, or red tint introduced by lighting conditions.
- Saturation last — once tones and casts are correct, boost or reduce saturation to taste.
Doing them in any other order forces re-work. For example, boosting saturation on a photo with a yellow cast will exaggerate the cast; you then have to undo and start over.
Use Adjustment Layers, Not Direct Adjustments
Every colour-correction tool in Photoshop 7.0 can be applied two ways:
- Direct. Ctrl+L applies Levels to the active layer immediately. The pixels change. Permanent (until you undo).
- As an adjustment layer. Click the black-and-white-circle icon at the bottom of the Layers palette → choose Levels. A new "Levels 1" layer appears above the active layer. The underlying pixels are unchanged; the adjustment is applied at display time. Double-click the adjustment layer thumbnail to re-open the dialog any time and change settings.
Always use adjustment layers. The only cost is slightly more memory; the benefit is permanent editability — three months later you can re-open the PSD, double-click the Levels layer, and tweak the values.
Levels — the Foundation
Open via adjustment layer. The Levels dialog shows a histogram with three sliders beneath it: black point (left), gamma/midtone (middle), white point (right).
The standard recipe
- Drag the black-point slider rightward until it touches the left edge of the histogram data.
- Drag the white-point slider leftward until it touches the right edge.
- If the midtones are too dark, drag the gamma slider slightly left (brighter); if too bright, drag right (darker).
This recipe alone improves about 80% of photographs in under 30 seconds. The reason: most cameras do not use the full available tonal range. A typical JPEG from a phone might have its darkest pixels at brightness 18 (not 0) and its brightest at 235 (not 255). Pulling the black and white points inward expands the actual data to fill the full range.
Per-channel Levels for colour casts
The dropdown at the top of the Levels dialog says "RGB" by default. Switch it to "Red", "Green", or "Blue" to adjust each channel independently. Use this to fix a colour cast at the source:
- Photo too blue overall? Open Levels, switch to Blue, drag the midtone slider slightly right to reduce blue in the midtones.
- Photo too red? Switch to Red, drag midtone right.
The Levels eyedroppers
Three eyedropper buttons on the right of the Levels dialog let you click a pixel in your image and tell Photoshop "make this black" / "make this neutral grey" / "make this white". The middle eyedropper (neutral grey) is the fastest way to fix any colour cast — click on something that should be neutral grey (a sidewalk, a white shirt in shadow, the sky in cloudy weather) and Photoshop neutralises the colour cast across the entire image automatically.
Curves — More Precise Tonal Control
Curves (Ctrl+M as direct adjustment, or via the adjustment-layer menu) replaces Levels' three sliders with a freeform graph. The horizontal axis is input brightness, the vertical is output brightness. Drag a point upward to brighten; downward to darken.
The classic film-look S-curve
For added contrast and a "film" look:
- Click on the curve about a third of the way from the bottom-left. Drag this point down a small amount (darkens shadows).
- Click on the curve about a third of the way from the top-right. Drag this point up a small amount (brightens highlights).
- The S-shape it produces is the universal "film contrast" recipe.
Brighten only the midtones
Click on the centre of the curve and drag upward. The shadows and highlights stay anchored at their endpoints; only the midtones brighten. This is the cleanest way to lift the midtones without blowing out highlights.
Channel-by-channel Curves
Same as Levels — switch the dropdown to Red, Green, or Blue, and you can colour-grade per channel. This is how the "teal-and-orange" colour grade popular in cinematography is built: a slight S-curve on the Blue channel (pushes shadows to blue, highlights to yellow) and a small downward bump on the Green channel midtones (pushes mids to magenta).
Color Balance — Quick Cast Fixes
Open as adjustment layer → Color Balance, or Ctrl+B for direct. Three sliders: Cyan ↔ Red, Magenta ↔ Green, Yellow ↔ Blue. Three Tone Balance buttons at the bottom: Shadows, Midtones, Highlights. Most fixes target Midtones.

Hue/Saturation — Vibrancy and Colour Shifts
Open as adjustment layer → Hue/Saturation, or Ctrl+U.
- Hue — shifts every colour around the colour wheel. Use sparingly — at +10 it gives a creative tint; at +30 it changes the entire palette.
- Saturation — the universal "vibrancy" slider. +10 to +15 improves most photos; above +25 starts looking unnatural.
- Lightness — adds white or black to every colour. Usually leave at 0.
Per-colour Hue/Saturation
The Edit dropdown at the top of the dialog lets you target one colour range: Reds, Yellows, Greens, Cyans, Blues, Magentas. For example: select Yellows and reduce Saturation by 30 to mute autumn leaves without affecting other colours; or select Blues and boost Saturation by 20 to deepen a sky.
Selective Color — Targeted Colour Shifts
Image → Adjustments → Selective Color (or via adjustment-layer menu).
This is the most precise colour-correction tool. The dialog has a Colors dropdown listing nine categories: Reds, Yellows, Greens, Cyans, Blues, Magentas, Whites, Neutrals, Blacks. For each, four sliders adjust how much Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black are mixed into that colour.
Use it for:
- Skin-tone correction without affecting other colours (target Reds and Yellows).
- Brightening a sky without affecting clouds (target Blues, reduce Yellow, add Cyan).
- Removing yellow from teeth in portraits (target Yellows in highlights, reduce Yellow, add Cyan).
Fixing Skin Tones — the Special Case
Skin is the colour humans are most sensitive to — small errors are immediately noticeable. The skin-tone fix:
- Use the Eyedropper tool (I) and click on a clear patch of skin.
- Open the Info palette (F8). Look at the RGB readout.
- Healthy skin under neutral lighting has roughly: Red > Green > Blue, with Red about 1.5× Blue.
- If Green > Red, the skin has a green cast (fluorescent). Add Red via Selective Color or Color Balance.
- If Blue > Green, the skin has a blue cast (shade). Reduce Blue.
- If R, G, B are roughly equal, the skin looks grey/sickly. Boost Red and reduce Blue.
Converting to Black and White
Photoshop 7.0 has three ways to remove colour:
- Image → Mode → Grayscale. Permanent, low quality. Avoid.
- Hue/Saturation, Saturation = −100. Quick but the result is flat.
- Channel Mixer with Monochrome ticked. The best result. Open via adjustment-layer menu. Tick Monochrome. Now mix Red, Green, and Blue channels to create the perfect black-and-white. Classic "dramatic sky" recipe: Red 60%, Green 30%, Blue 10% — the bright sky becomes dramatically darker.
A Recommended Colour-Correction Workflow
- Add a Levels adjustment layer. Set black point and white point. Adjust midtone gamma if needed.
- Add a Color Balance adjustment layer. Fix any obvious cast on the midtones.
- Add a Curves adjustment layer. Apply a gentle S-curve for film-style contrast.
- Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Bump Saturation by +10 to +15.
- If skin tones still look off, add a Selective Color adjustment layer targeting Reds and Yellows.
- Group all five into a layer set (Photoshop 7.0 calls this "linking" layers; CS2+ has proper Layer Groups).
- Save the PSD. Continue with sharpening and export.

Should I use Levels or Curves?
Use Levels for the standard recipe (black-white-midtone). Use Curves when you need precise control over a specific tonal range. Most workflows use both — Levels first for the overall fix, Curves second for refinement.
What is "white balance" in Photoshop 7.0?
Photoshop 7.0 has no dedicated "white balance" slider — that arrived in Camera Raw. The equivalent is the grey-point eyedropper in Levels: click on something that should be neutral grey and Photoshop neutralises the cast.
Why does my edited photo look great on screen but bad in print?
