· Tested on Windows 10 and Windows 11 · 3 guides

Which guide do you need?

Pick your operating system below. The Windows 10 guide is the most detailed and covers every common error. The Windows 11 guide focuses on Win 11–specific issues (compatibility mode, DirectDraw, font rendering). The 64-bit guide explains why PS 7.0 is a 32-bit app and how to run it reliably on a 64-bit machine.

Before you start — what you need

If you do not have a legitimate copy of the installer, see our download page for information on where the software can legally be obtained. We do not host the installer ourselves.

Common installation errors — quick answers

"Setup cannot continue because your version of Windows is not supported"

This error appears because the installer is checking for Windows XP or 2000. Right-click Setup.exe → Properties → Compatibility tab → check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" → select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) → click OK, then run the installer. Detailed steps are in the Windows 10 guide.

Photoshop installs but crashes immediately on launch

This is almost always caused by the DirectDraw setting on modern GPUs. Open Photoshop's Prefs (Edit → Preferences → Display & Cursors) and disable hardware acceleration — or apply the registry fix in the Windows 10 guide before the first launch.

The installer asks for a serial number I don't have

The serial number was printed on the CD sleeve or the card inside the box. If you bought a legitimate copy secondhand without the sleeve, Adobe's support can sometimes look it up against your registered account. We cannot provide serial numbers — entering a serial you did not purchase is software piracy.

Photoshop 7.0 won't open on Windows 11

Windows 11 dropped some legacy compatibility layers that Windows 10 still had. Our Windows 11 guide covers the specific fixes needed — mainly a registry entry to restore the old font rendering path and setting the executable to run as administrator.

Can I install Photoshop 7.0 alongside Photoshop CC?

Yes. They install to different directories and do not interfere with each other. PSD files will open in whichever version is set as the default handler — you can change that in Windows Settings → Apps → Default apps.
